SAFE!! URGENT!! TN, Lewisburg: "Fable", Blind Hound/Lab mix

This is a picture of Fable. He was adopted out, but brought back by the adopter.
I work with a group of folks who try to get dogs out before they are euthanized
from our kill shelter in Lewisburg, TN. Fable is blind. I went to the home where
he was adopted to try to see if I could help her keep him, and had a chance to
interact with him and see what was going on. He is very sweet but she had too
many dogs and several young to teenage children. He was running into things and
the confusion made him confused, but he was so wanting to please - absolutely
angelic.. The lady just had too many dogs and kids to give him much attention..
We are looking for a foster - may have one, if we could get a rescue to take him
on..He is scheduled to be euthanized in one week from Thursday. Approximately 2
years old, approx 35 lbs.
Thank you for your time.

VA, King George: "Piglet", Deaf Terrier Mix

"Piglet"-she is deaf- King George VA

Control #11-20-10-6 Bull Terrier mix, female, white, 8-12 mo old, stray (DEAF). The people here at the pound and the vet have been working very hard to clear up my skin. I have been on medicine for several weeks and am doing much better. I have some oddities like I am missing one toe on my back right foot and my toes on my back left foot are different lengths. I am so outgoing and playful, very smart and sweet, you hardly even notice I can't hear. I love to play with toys. The other day a family came to meet me and we went in the playroom. I dove into the bin of toys and starting digging through until I found the perfect one to play with. My treatment is just about done and I really need to find a new home to move to. I will miss the people here, and I know they will miss me, but it's time to find my forever home.

GA, Liberty County: "Romeo" Deaf Pit Mix

Romeo.Take a look at this stunning boy. He came in with his mate and were suppose to be pciked up by their owner..he never came.. Around 2 years old and very sweet, so is his girlfriend, very bonded and need to go together. see next 2 pics. Romeo is deaf or is ignoring our noises 100%. He is very interested in us rather than looking and sniffing other dogs. I would trust him with other females right now. He doesn't do that good with cats, no aggression but I think he would just try to snatch one if he could.

URGENT!! PA: "Polar", Visially/Hearing Impaired Aussie

(NO PICTURE)

I live in Brooklyn NY but network dogs into rescue from Ohio, WV, and KY.
In the past, shelters I worked with have sent dogs to a rescuer in PA, but
recently we learned that this rescuer was hospitalized and there are serious
medical issues. A few local rescuers and I are trying to move all the dogs
to other rescues and have already moved a good number. One of the dogs, we
discovered, is a 3 year old lethal white—the rescuer tells us that he is a
border collie [NOT SO - double-merle Aussie] named Polar — . This is her
description of Polar

Polar is a typical active border collie [Aussie]- loves toys, housetrained,
follows simple commands with voice and sign- can see and hear some. I saved
him from craig's llst 2 years ago. He loves everyone, especially kids!
Another rescuer who visited the property said she had a great impression of
Polar: She said he was a friendly and happy boy! Polar’s pictures are below.
Polar has been neutered and he is UTD on his shots as well. We would
appreciate it if you could help us place him. We even have transport coming
up to the NY area every few weeks and could send him or try to arrange some
other means. We are anxious to get Polar into another rescue –the situation
at his present home is not promising and we want to ensure he goes to a
rescue that understands him and that will give him what he needs. Polar
is in Southeastern PA near Maryland. I would be happy to get you as much
information as you need.

If you can help Polar, please contact:

URGENT!! OH, Ashland: Blind Senior Australian Cattle Dog

I'm writing to you about a senior Australian Cattle Dog who was found as a stray. This poor boy is blind. He is in a shelter in Ashland, Ohio. Please take a moment to look at the attached pictures and read what the shelter contact has written about him. This poor boy is urgent as the shelter is full and they are starting to put some to sleep...being blind he will be one of the first to be put down. Please don't let that happen to him. He is said to be a quiet, calm dog who gets along great with people and other dogs. If you can't help but know someone who can please pass this information along to them as soon as possible as again his situation is very urgent.

I am a volunteer at a local dog shelter in Ashland, Ohio and we have a stray senior Australian Cattle dog that is in urgent danger of being put to sleep. I was wondering if you had any room for this old guy or know of anyone that could take him. He is great with people and other dogs. He does like to be calm and quiet which says that he would make a good house pet for someone who has the same environment.

URGENT!! AZ, Tonopah: Blind Heeler (seizures)

This young dog was found by some Good Samaritans here in Tonopah who took
her to Buckeye Vet for an exam. As it turns out, she has eyeballs, but
always keeps her eyes closed as she is blind. The Good Samaritans also
reported she has seizures that have last upward of 5-10 minutes but has not
had one since 1/23; they also stated they were giving her Aleve (yikes!).
She is about 8 months old, very sweet, but neither Charlene from Living
Water Ranch Rescue (who currently has the dog) nor we have the time or
resources to commit to her. If you can help this sweet dog sooner than
later, as she needs bloodwork done ASAP, please contact Charlene at

URGENT!! CA, Orange: Blind Pit Mix

this dog immediately had my heart in my throat...
he is so gentle and so loving and after spending about 15 seconds with him i realized he was absolutely blind...
he would hear my voice, and i'd get real close to him and i'd pet him and give him kisses... and then i would quietly step away... and he would hold his head up towards the sky as if he were still looking at me...
i would back 10-15 feet away (and to the side) and just stand there observing him... and he would just stand there the entire time, without moving his body or his head or his line of vision, and just look upwards as if i was still right in front of him...
i then had to run into the shelter meeting they were having... and once getting out, brought leigh anne back with me to show her...
it was clear as day that his other senses (hearing/smelling) are in heightened states in order to accommodate this... no reaction to hand movement, no reaction to food movement...
and i'm not sure that the shelter staff are even aware, because they have him out in a public cage and his "4 day stray hold" should be up tomorrow...
they also have him listed as 5 months, but i'd say he is more like 1 or 2 years old?
please do not let them euthanize him!!

NJ, Newark: "Helen", Blind Shih Tzu

Meet Helen, our special needs sweetie Shih Tzu. Helen came to us as a stray the beginning of November.and she has been a staff favorite since then. She has attended a few adoption days and has been the hit of the events--that is until people find out she is blind and needs to have drops put in her eyes twice a day. Seems no one wants a dog with medical problems. So Helen waits patiently for that "special" person. She does really well getting around and loves to be fussed over. Helen also likes other animals. She is up to date on shots, housebroken (loves to go for walks) and will be altered and microchipped upon adoption. If you could be that special person, please come meet Helen. Her shelter ID is 97422.

For more information about Helen or any of the other animals at the Associated Humane Society Shelter in Newark, please email Karen or Debbie at associatedhumane@aol.com or karenapow@aol.com. Reference the dog's ID number in your email. Or better still, stop by the shelter in person. They are located at 124 Evergreen Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, and they are rescue friendly.

SAFE!! URGENT!! CA, San Pedro: "Arial", Blind Cocker Spaniel

ARIAL - A1181858
HARBOR SHELTER - SAN PEDRO, CA

Thisd little girl is a tan Cocker Spaniel and 7 yrs old. She weighs 27 pounds and has been at Harbor since January 13, 2011.

Comments by a Harbor volunteer:

"Arial is an absolute doll!! Owner surrender due to “landlord”. Poor thing was very neglected by her owner – her coat was a mess so she had to be clipped short and her toe nails so long that some of them actually curled into the shape of a lifesaver!!! She’s 7 years old and blind. So scared she was shaking like a leaf the first time I entered her kennel but as sweet as can be. Loves treats and easily made a friend using them. She is gentle and sweet…….. so happy to have some time w/ the volunteers. And, she was so tolerant during her grooming sessions – even during the nail clipping – her stubby little tail was wagging, post grooming session! After just a couple of visits w/ Arial she now meets me at the kennel gate. The barking dogs in the shelter scare her, made worse by the fact that she is blind. This sweet girl needs out asap! She’d be a wonderful companion for an older adult. She gets around great and does quite well despite her blindness…… just has to become familiar w/ her surroundings. She is sweet, sweet, sweet! Can you help her?"

SAFE!! MD, Baltimore: "Charlie", Blind Poodle

Charlie has been surrendered to our hospital. His owner is an elderly man who is in the hospital under hospice care and, unfortunately, is not coming home. Charlie was brought to us for euthanasia by the owner's son.

Charlie is 12 years old and has been diabetic since 2006. He requires insulin injections twice daily but is very good about taking them! He is also blind due to diabetic cataracts, but does very well despite the blindness. Charlie is a very sweet friendly, easy going dog.

He is currently being cared for in our kennel, but I cannot keep him here for an extended period of time. I am trying to avoid euthanasia for him, so if there is anyone who may be able to take care of him, please contact me!

SAFE!! URGENT!! PA, Pottsville: "Morgan", Blind Black Lab

*Please cross-post to folks you know that may be interested in helping
Morgan with a rescue/foster/or permanent home. He’s one very handsome boy!*

Morgan needs help ASAP

Morgan is currently residing at the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, PA.
He's blind from glaucoma, is 30 pounds underweight and was likely an
"outside" dog that never received any of the care he needed.
We are happy he found his way to us where we can keep him warm and safe for
this cold spell, but he desperately needs and deserves a home.
A shelter environment is especially difficult for dogs with no vision.

Despite all his troubles, he is extremely friendly and sweet,
(the typical lab personality!) and is good with the other dogs.
His tail never seems to stop wagging...

STILL NEEDS RESCUE 1/31/11

TX, San Leon: "Shrek", Blind Jack Russel Terrier

I have been asked to look into options for a blind JRT mix. This boy is at a Texas shelter. Finding homes for dogs without disabilities is already very difficult here in the South and it is almost impossible to find someone for a blind dog. Shrek is a young adult who is blind in both eyes. He is incredibly sweet with people and will get used to other dogs as long as there is a slow introduction and the other dog is willing to allow him his space and respects it when he growls to tell them to leave him alone. We are desperate for a place for him since he currently lives at a shelter with 100 dogs and despite all the staff’s efforts, he really does deserve a chance at a real home. He is fully vetted and neutered.

URGENT!! CA, San Diego: "Ruben", Blind Senior Dog

11 yrs, neutered, blind-so he has to eat at same times every day so
you can schedule his potty breaks-he was housebroken but because he
cant see, he cant find the door anymore. You have to watch him like a
puppy on that, if he sniffs around, you can ask him if he wants to
potty. If he sits down, no, if he acts alert, yes....
Doesnt like to be left alone outside-will bark "let me in". Loves car
rides. Perfectly happy being a tv couch potato too. Doesnt mind cats.
Blind, so cant fetch. Not a licker. Pretty submissive unless he goes
into food smell overload (hungry and can smell it coming), then he
will only respond to a firm correction. If she can take him, I can get
his shots caught up. He had a blood panel test and he tested fine on
everything.
Let me give you a little background on him-we've had him since he was
4 yrs old. When Ruben and I separated, then divorced, I wasnt at my
house a lot and the kids took over caring for him (they did half of
the time normally anyway). Well once he went blind, they didnt know
how to deal with it. I had his pupils tested and they do react to
light, so according to the vet he isnt 100% blind but he constantly
knocks into things. He had some digestion problems so I had him tested
for diabetes, thinking it may have caused his blindness and chronic
diarrhea. He tested negative and most likely believe that it is
detached retinas-I dont want to believe that he received a blow that
caused it but the young males in the house, my son in law and my other
daughter's BF teased and were not always nice to him, following my
ex's lead-he constantly teased him. I guess I'll never know how it
happened, as no one's fessing up to anything.
Anyway, it got to the point when I came back for a visit, they had him
tied to a table with pee pads and just cleaned up his messes. They
said he needed to be put down. When I realized the conditions he was
being forced to endure, I wanted to give him a better quality of life.
We got rid of the pee pads and retrained him to go outside. I also
changed his diet to boiled chicken and rice until his digestion was
corrected. I still feed him that but supplement it with organic kibble
and a vet prescribed vitamin. The vet also gave me a round of
antibiotics that seem to perk him up and bring his spunky attitude
back to that of a terrier-he was 'out of it' when we first got him. He
also was overweight-the diet I had him on fixed that and he's in
fairly good health, other than his sight.
I really dont want to put an older dog in the shelter, as Im sure you
know what his fate most likely will be, but Im running out of options

German Shepherd Dog/Labrador Retriever Mix: An adoptable dog in
Jackson, NJ

Jersey is a friendly boy who came to us as a stray. While he is
certainly not blind, we think Jersey may have a slight vision
impairment. For this reason, we do not want Jersey going to a home
with children under the age of 15. Jersey is a playful but quiet dog.
He likes people and seems okay with other dogs. We believe Jersey is
house trained. To adopt our dogs you must come to the facility with
your entire family, including dogs, to meet with our staff and the dog
you are interested in.

STILL NEEDS RESCUE!! URGENT!! NJ: "Champ", Blind Shepherd mix

He is a **wonderful dog and a great companion but due to his disability (he's blind)** his time may be very limited. Adopting an older pet can be very rewarding - they may be older but still have a lot of love to share. She would take him but she lives in an apartment that doesn't allow dogs. If you know of anyone who would like to adopt Champ - or any of the other animals - please pass this on. I know some of you don't live local, but you know or may know people who do. Please feel free to pass this along!

URGENT!! TX, Fort Worth: 2 Visually Impaired Dogs

I really hope that someone can help these great dogs!! Both are very sweet. They are located at the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control at 4900 Martin St, in Fort Worth TX. They have to go to rescue only, will be euthanized otherwise!! Both are very sweet and friendly dogs, seem to be good with other dogs. The bigger one is a cattle dog mix.....and he is for sure blind, appears to have eyes that are bulging out maybe due to injury?? But he for sure is blind. I think that the smaller one is also blind, but he may be able to see shadows.......He is probably a chihuahua/papillion mix. I would say both dogs are not older than 4 yrs.
