SAFE!!XXX URGENT!! CA, LA "Sammy" Blind Senior Yorkie

WILL GO TO SHELTER 11/5 if no one steps forward

Sammy is a 10 year old Yorkie boy who lived happily with a senior couple for the... past 9 years. Sammy’s dad passed away last December and his mom just passed away a week ago. Sammy’s parents have 2 sons but both are unable to provide a new home for Sammy. Sammy is currently staying with our pet sitter Nancy and is scheduled to go to the Agoura Hills shelter on Saturday 11/5.
Sammy is a senior pup who needs love and TLC. Sammy is almost completely blind and will bite when he is startled. To help Sammy feel at ease, we must approach him slowly with plenty of verbal cues. Sammy is a very affectionate pup, he likes to sit on laps and go on walks. Sammy is currently getting along well with 2 other small dogs at Nancy’s place.
If there is anything you can do to help Sammy find a new forever home, or at least a temporary home, please contact me.

MD, Baltimore "Grace" Deaf PBT

BALTIMORE MARYLAND ~ DEAF PITTIE GRACE NEEDS TO BE RE-HOMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Name: Grace, SPAYED, UTD on shots, HW-
Age: 15-18 months
Disability: Deaf
... Breed/Weight: White, Pit Bull Terrier, approx. 45 lbs

Grace is a deaf 15-18 month old white female Pit Bull terrier that this owner needs to find a home for. She is housebroken, knows some sign language and is good with cats, other dogs and people (altho never has been around young children that the owner knows of). He has only had Grace for about a year and got her from a local shelter. Owner adopted Grace with someone and that someone is now gone and owner is trying to work two jobs and return to school. That all leaves Grace alone 12+ hours a day. She is crate trained.

Grace is a very sweet and affectionate pup. She loves belly rubs and to be petted. She is highly energetic & loves to be walked. She loves interacting with people and has been socialized with many dogs and cats. With love, consistency, and regimen, Grace has come to understand several commands using basic sign language. Like any puppy, she may give you that look, - “What?! Really?” but always follows through. She enjoys looking out the windows to see what or who is passing by.

Because of her disability, it can be difficult to let her off the leash. She is looking for someone with patience and a lot of love to give back; and for a home with a lot of space to run her little heart out! She loves to run and goes out with the owner when he bikes.

My name is Sweet Sarah (CF4319) and all I want is tospend the rest of my life as part of a loving family. The one who rescues mewill be so happy they did! The smile I’m wearing is on my face all the time -I’m such a happy and friendly girl. I appear to have cataracts, but I can still see and my joyful spirit shines out for everyone to witness. I love being withpeople - friends and strangers alike - and I walk very well on a leash. I was picked up as a stray in the Burgaw area, but no one ever came forward to claim me. Now I’m hoping a kind and caring person will take me into their heart andhome. I appear to be a Lab mix, and we all know what great dogs Labs are, don’t we?

SAFE!!URGENT! FL, Lynn Haven, "Peaches" Blind bulldog/boxer puppy

This sweet little girl is Peaches. She is a bulldog/boxer mix puppy who is blind. The vet has accessed her as being blind from birth. Peaches is in the Lynn Haven Animal Control Shelter in Lynn Haven, FL. This very endearing little girl is in urgent need of rescue/adoption. Below is the message her foster mother writes about her. I also got a chance today to speak with Renee' about Peaches. She is a sweetheart and got along excellently with the two resident maltese's. In fact they actually have a hide and seek game the dogs all figured out while playing together which Renee' described and it sounded so cute. Please take a moment to read the message and view the pictures of Peaches. We do not know how long this little girl has at the shelter so let's try to find her rescue or better yet her forever home now.

My name is Renee’, I am the office manager at the veterinary office, Pet Health Center of Lynn Haven. The reason I am writing is to ask for help in placing a dog with special needs who is totally blind. She is a small English bulldog-Boxer type mix, about 26 lb puppy, now about 6 months old. She was taken in by the Lynn Haven Animal Control around September 19th and is still at the shelter. They brought her in for exam and Dr. Laroux assessed she was blind from birth most likely congenital. At the time I saw her and could tell she was extremely perceptive, intelligent and very good natured.

I went to the shelter Sept 20th, spent some time visiting and offered to foster her hoping to place her. I kept her quarantined from my other animals (2 dogs, 3 cats) for 10 days and worked with her during that time. She responded very well, very social, happy and although blind she is very active outside, playful and adapts extremely well. She has also recently received her 2nd DHLPP, Rabies and Bordatella heartworm and flea control.

After keeping her for about three weeks, I returned her to the Lynn Haven Animal Control (10/11/11). I spoke to the director (Ramona) who said they would try to place her and I requested time to make other arrangements for her.

I am writing for any possible assistance you may have available. I would be more than happy to pick her up and transport her to any location. I would also sponsor her spay which she is due to have two to three weeks from now. I have made a bullet list I will include:

  • I will sponsor spay

  • Has had 2nd Distemper series, Rabies and Bordatella

  • Has had flea and heartworm prevention

  • Has been quickly house trained

  • Very happy, very well adjusted, contented to sit in crate

  • Loves other dogs, cats and people

  • Will be perfect for obedience training, does not let her blindness interfere in any way Very intelligent, listens well and perceptive to sound

  • Loves to play with plastic water bottles, fetches by sound

SAFE!!PTS DATE TODAY!! NY, Manhattan "Sweetcake" Deaf PBT X

My name is SWEETCAKE. My Animal ID # is A914647.
I am a female... white am pit bull ter mix. The shelter thinks I am about 1 year old.

I came in the shelter as a SEIZED on 10/20/2011 from NY 10472, owner surrender reason stated was OWN EVICTA volunteer writes: This sweetheart of a girl was laying quietly in her kennel as I went back and forth taking other dogs out for a walk. She never barked, never called attention to herself, just calmly waited until it was her turn. I leashed her easily and out we went. She appears to be housetrained taking care of business as soon as we were on the street. Sweetcake came to the shelter when her owner ran into some personal difficulties. She was clearly well taken care of, her coat is beautiful, clean and healthy. She's calm and gentle and sweet. I think she may be deaf as many white dogs are, as she did not react to sounds around her. When I sat on the bench to take some notes she was up beside me, as much of her in my lap as she could fit, ready for some hugs and kisses. Sweetcake is the perfect name for this girl, as they do not get sweeter than this. She is so calm and gentle; the only time I saw her get excited is when some squirrels were teasing her. Sweetcake is easy to be with, her calm demeanor makes her the perfect best friend, the perfect companion to whom to tell all your secrets, the perfect pal. Run, don't walk, to meet Sweetcake today. I loved her and so will you.

Shelter is in a rural area with few staff and they are desperate for rescue for Akeeles.

SAFE!!XX URGENT FL, Orlando Blind, Partial Deaf Pug

A217897 - UNALTERED MALE, FAWN PUG, 8YRS

This animal is currently located in kennel WDI30 and will be available for rescue until 11/03/2011.

We just took in this dog as a stray, and chances are no one is going to reclaim. He is a cute little Pug with chronic skin issues around the head, neck areas as well as the back legs. His skin condition has been neglected for months, and he appears to have a hard time hearing, and judging by the condition of his eyes, he is also blind. When he smells your hand, his little tail wags, and then he bumps into you. The needle would not go through his skin when we tried to heartworm test him as it is so tough from having this condition for so long. His mid body area looks almost totally normal, but the front and back end have the condition. i am sure this will never totally heal and his skin pigment is now black in those areas. Rescue would be the best for this little guy, so if you can take, plase let us know. He is friendly, weighs 11 pounds and HW test is pending.

FL, Lakeland "Cody" Peke/Spaniel X with Cataracts

Name: Cody
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Thought to be Pekenese/Cocker Spaniel Mix
Age: 5 years
Location: Lakeland, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Cody is neutered. He received a one year rabies vaccination on 10/27/2011. He also had a heartworm test that was negative. No other vaccinations were given. He received a double dose for rabies because he had one in August and it was entered incorrectly in vets computer and not noticed until today after he had been given it.

Owner Info: Cody's owner is 89 years old. In the last year she was diagnosed with a mass in her lower abdomen and has refused to have tests or treatment. Her daughter is a Hospice Nurse and got her into the home Hospice services. She is now very frail. During this time Cody has developed cataracts. She only gets a low social security income and can only stand for 2 or 3 minutes at a time, a couple times a day. They live alone in an apartment and she has stopped taking Cody outside, he has to go on pads she puts on the floor. Everyone takes turns going over there to clean up as Cody often misses the pads. They have tried to get her into an ALF or now Nursing Home, because of her low income and her not wanting to move, every time there's an opening it is just really proving impossible. Since Cody lost his sight he gets scared more easily by the sounds of other people and animals. He's a real sweet dog and is very attached to his owner, she told one of the nurse's that she couldn't leave the house unless Cody died first. They don't think she really believes that's possible but that she would risk her own health for his is a testament to how much she loves him and how horrible it would be for him to have to go to the pound or SPCA. They don't want to have Cody put down, he's family, but they have two large dogs that's he's afraid of, if they could get her to agree to come live with them. Cody is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He is good with people of all ages, female dogs, cats and other small animals. They are really at their wits end and would so appreciate help.

XXX URGENT!! Romania "Petronel" Blind, Beaten and Abused

PETRONEL : male adult, approx. 4-5 years old, neutered, no vaccine yet.
shoulder height 55cm, length 68cm, weight 11kg. he is blind because while trapped he was hit hard over the head. he will not recover his vision since the blow affected his brain. He is gentle and clean, afraid of the other dogs and still afraid if you touch his head. i do it very often and very gently and he looks like he will be ok soon. Petronel needs eye drops 3 times per day and 1 time some medication for the blood circulation in his brain. His injury from the wire around his middle is healing nicely. he is gentle but scared. he follows me and my voice and manages the two steps he has to use to go to his enclosure.

This is on behalf of a lady who single-handedly rescues homeless and damaged animals in Romania at ' Bobi ' Tantava Pet Sanctuary. Some of the cases of abuse are horrific. This is one such case.

Located in the village of Tantava near to Bucharest, Romania, 'Bobi' Tantava Pet Sanctuary is run single-handedly by Dodi Carmen . Romania provides one of the harshest environments in Europe for domestic animals, with daily reports of mutilations & killings. Travelling around the countryside on her battered old bicycle, she nurtures, protects & cares for these endangered animals.
She faces such horrors daily and even if no help can be offered for this dog, it would boost her morale just to have your members drop in to her Facebook Page and say ' Hi ! ' Here is the post in her words :-

' Even in the 'Horrorscape' which is the land where animals pitifully exist in Romania, it seems impossible for a new low to be achieved in the cesspit of humanity. A small dog was caught in a wire trap, almost strangled and cut in half by this wire. Someone came along and found him. But instead of freeing him, they beat him about the head. One eye was lost and damage to his brain caused blindness in the other eye. Abuse by humans at an unimaginable level. But now comes the real humbling factor. This quiet, pitiful little creature, damaged unnecessarily and brutally, when I sat and wept after hearing the vets diagnosis, came to me and put his head in my lap to comfort me. At that moment in time I was disgustingly ashamed to be a member of the human race. This brave, loving little guy now needs a home. A place of sanctuary, a place of safety... a place where he may dare to believe that there is someone out there who knows how to love... just like he does ! '

Kansas City, Blind Fluffy and her sister need a home!

Fluffy and her sister, Kookie, are in a no-kill shelter in Kansas City. They are a bonded pair and have been there for over a month... these two sisters would love to have a home of their own!

They have an adorable video!!

http://www.petango.com/webservices/adoptablesearch/wsYouTubeVideo.aspx?videoid=Y5ufZ3mNjjM

From our contact:

I work for Wayside Waifs in Kansas City. I am contacting you to see if you could offer us any help. We have a wonderful dog named fluffy who is blind. She has a bonded mate by the name of kookie that loves and protects her. They have been with us for over a month and I am looking into recues that might be willing to help them. Please let me know if your group can offer any help.

From their adoption page:

Meet Kookie! This sweet girl came into Wayside with her sister, Fluffy, when their owner could no longer care for them. Fluffy and Kookie are sisters, but they were born into different litters a year apart. Since they are so bonded, they need to be adopted as a pair. Not only do they love eachother, but Fluffy relies on Kookie to be her eyes. Fluffy is blind, and Kookie helps her to get around and feel comfortable in her surroundings.

Kookie is very sweet and affectionate, and she needs a loving family. She and her sister both walk nicely on leash together, and Fluffy does really well getting around by following Kookie. These girls would do best in a home with older children who can understand Fluffy's blindness and be respectful of it by not startling her while she is eating, sleeping, or otherwise busy concentrating on something. Both Fluffy and Kookie are a bit overweight, and they would benefit from an exercise program and being on a low fat diet. Getting them to a healthy weight will help them to live longer.

They are lab mixes...

SAFE!!XXX URGENT!!! Central IL "Lily" Blind senior beagle mix

Take a look at beautiful Lily!!! Lily is in a high kill shelter in Illinois and needs rescue... She has the most gentle eyes...

Lily and her dog friend, Lilac, were often chained to a tree and neglected. Since Lilac is a small, young Terrier mix, she will be adopted easily. Lily, on the other hand, is 7-8 years old, has some worn-down front teeth, and she is blind. She has an exceptionally sweet temperament, and deserves a second chance at a real life, in a real home.

Lily is at a high-kill AC facility in central Illinois, where every kennel is full and it is difficult to justify keeping older dogs with special needs when space is so badly needed. Lily does NOT consider being blind as a “disability.” She uses her other senses to get around, and she has no trouble at all finding an inviting lap!

We love her, and we hope and pray that your rescue has a foster home which would allow you to take her into your care. Please contact me directly if you are able to help Lily, and I will put you in touch with our Kennel Supervisor. We will assist with her transport.

Lily is spayed and has her basic vaccinations. We tested her today (10/26), and she is heartworm-negative. She gets along with most of the other dogs we’ve introduced her to. Thank you SO MUCH for helping to spread the word about her. She is truly a sweetheart.

SAFE!! SC, Summerville "Teno" Blind Senior Min. Schnauzer

Name: Teno
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Miniature Schnauzer
Age: 8 years
Location: Summerville, SC

Vet/Medical Info: Teno received a heartworm test 5/4/10. It was negative. He was due for all of his vaccinations 5/4/11. He is neutered and was on Thyrozine but client hasn't picked up any lately.

Owner Info: Teno's (pronounced Tah-no) owner is on disability and tries to work part-time to make ends meet. She does not feel she is capable of giving Teno the attention and care he needs at this time as her health prevents her. She has posted Teno on Facebook and Craigslist and has also talked to P.A.W.S. and a Schnauzer rescue program. He has been housebroken all his life, but recently has started having more accidents. She thinks this is due to her lack of a consistent schedule with him. Teno adapted well when they moved a few months ago, adapted to the new floor plan and furniture lay-out very quickly. He is careful in new places and doesn't seem to mind or get frightened. Teno was diagnosed with SARDS and he also has a thyroid condition that sometimes requires daily medication, Thyrozine 0.3 MG (this is very inexpensive). Because of this condition he also eats only weight control food. Teno is a very loving, calm, sweet dog. "Teno" is short for his Cherokee Indian name meaning "Little Scout". She adopted him when he was 1.5 years old and he has been a joy in her life. He hardly barks, loves to snuggle and needs lots of love. He is used to living in apartments, but loves the outdoors too. He is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, Teno is housebroken and leash trained. He is good with people of all ages, other dogs, cats and small animals (he currently lives with 4 birds). Most people are marvelled when they find out he's blind because he does so well. He likes to play and is well behaved around strangers and visitors. He is used to being an "only child", however, he does well with other pets. He has a cute personality and loves attention but doesn't need it all the time. She hates to admit it, but time is of the essence. She can't keep him much longer and needs relief as soon as possible.

SAFE!!NY, Dover Plains "Bones" Blind Senior Diabetic Lab X

Name: Bones
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Lab Mix
Age: 12 years
Location: Dover Plains, NY

Vet/Medical Info: Bones had all of her vaccinations 7/29/11. The distemper and rabies were for 3 years. She is spayed and was tested on 7/29 for heartworm and was negative. She is on Insulin.

Owner Info: Bones's current owner would love to keep her as she is a total sweetheart, but she can't financially due to other pets with health conditions. Bones is blind and diabetic. Her owner found her in horrific condition, her eyes were swollen shut, she was starved (about 30 pounds underweight), filthy, missing fur and couldn't even stand on her own four feet. After several weeks of R&R, lots of treats and love, she is improving impressively. Their vet gave them a generous discount to have her checked out to see how bad she was. Everything they were concerned about came back negative, however she was extremely and dangerously diabetic. She has started on insulin shots, they have increased the amount numerous times and think they have finally found the right dosage for her. Despite all of this, her tail continues to wag and all she wants to do is rest her head in your lap and be loved. Bones is approximately 12 years old though her teeth are in good shape. She is blind (due to the untreated diabetes) and can only decipher light and dark and sometimes a shadow. Her coat is coming back shiny and smooth though she does have her gray hair to give away her age. She is great with cats and dogs, is extremely intelligent and is already learning commands to help her navigate while on walks. You say "step" and she lifts her paw to feel for the step. She loves walks now and immediately comes when you whistle for her and knows other commands such as "right" "left" "step up" "step down" "sit" "come". She is still having accidents in the house due to the diabetes but is completely trained to go on weewee pads. They have contacted Rescue organizations, SPCA and placed a Petfinder ad. Bones is an inside dog with the run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained. She is great with people of all ages, dogs, cats and other small animals (she currently lives with dogs, a cat and a snake). Please open your heart and home to this old gal so she can live out the remainder of her life in a loving home being spoiled and cuddled. Bones is truly a sweetheart just wanting to see what her life should have been like all along, before she was a stray. She is a true fighter! She was near death and in just 3 months has gained weight, grown her fur back and can run and play!

SAFE!!WV, Hinton "Thistle" Blind Schnauzer

Thistle was tied outside to briar bushes alone starving with no food or water. Initially I wasn’t sure we could save her:

Thistle is so unbelievably grateful for love and attention it breaks my heart. I didn’t think I would be impractical but Thistle is a relatively young vital loving girl who deserves so much more than life has dealt her. She doesn’t care that she is blind. She moves right along in a hurry to get to unknown places. A bump on the face doesn’t faze her one bit! She is an inspiration. And she just wiggles with joy and surprise when anyone actually gives her love, like it is all she has ever hoped for and her ever dream has come true!

SAFE!!XXX URGENT!! ID, Boise Blind Corgi X

This adorable little boy is in the shelter in Boise, Idaho... He is looking for a warm bed to call his own! He's a very sweet boy who loves kids!

From the woman who found him:

This adorable lil guy is currently at the Idaho humane Society (BOISE) on stray hold, for min stray hold time, I doubt he will make adoption floor due to being blind. He was a stray that got dropped off at my house by my daughter.
He is a 16 lb dog, male intact, blind, Very good teeth, seems youngish. I had him 1 nite and he did have an accident but only one, could have been my fault. Tan, blond with darker markings on face. I think he is a corgi mix, shaped like a corgi with fluffy hair that has obviously been given a homemade shave.

He was found by a six yr old girl he really loved, and when brought to my house warmed up quickly to me, when I showed him kindness, and warmth and food. Seems VERY Smart. I was told on sat at the BOISE : Idaho Humane Society, they didnt think he wold be put up for adoption. Due to the fact Blind dogs are scared, and may bite out of fear of unknown.... I will do what I can to help but need someone to give me hope and help too.. I am currently fostering another blind dog, and 4 cat fosters. Plus my own menagerie... I think this little dog would be a perfect pet for the right people, given a chance. I have put found ads in 2 local papers and on craigslist boise under found dogs....
Thanks, April

SAFE! SC, Chester County "Bob" Blind Poodle

"Bob" was discovered at a local school peeking in the front door. The school called animal control and would not release the children until he was removed. He has been at the animal shelter for the past 3 weeks. He is completely blind, and may have been since birth. He was so miserable and lost at the busy shelter that I brought him home last night to foster. He sat for 1.5 hours while I cut off a grocery bag full of hair (he originally looked like a very dirty sheep!) and bathed him. He is spry and loves to explore. He has transformed into a different dog: confident, social, and very loving. He likes to have his person within hearing distance. He measures the lengths of the rooms of my home by footsteps. He runs into walls and objects, but just back up and keeps going. He is great with my 6 dogs, all large breeds. He is good with cats and kids. He likes to follow behind a dog, using the dog as a guide.

My concerns are my 6 large dogs who jump over each other in excitement when it is time to go out. Our doors always manage to get left open as my son and his friends run in and out in play. We have toys left out each day, so the environment is always changing. My yard is unfenced (electric fencing) And I have stairs, which he has tumbled down once (I admit, this is new territory for me).

Bob really needs rescue or adoption into an appropriate home soon. He is a wonderful dog and I have already fallen for him! He bonds quickly and loves the attention. It really saddens me to think about this little guy wandering alone and blind out there in the woods or on a roadside, as he did.

SAFE!!XXX URGENT!! VA, Gloucester "Malcolm" Visually-impaired Spaniel/Hound Mix

UPDATE 11/20: Malcom is still in need and is running out of time.

I am a volunteer working with a small group (Animal Control Outreach Rescue Network) that tries to save dogs in county pounds.
We work with the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society / Gloucester-Mathews-Middlesex Animal Shelter, Virginia. We have had an exceptional high intake in the last two months. This is particularly difficult because we have a large number of heart worm positive dogs and have just been able to order immiticide to treat them. Many of them are considered very adoptable and their treatments are being sponsored. However, we are thirty days away from placing them after their treatment. Therefore the older, more physically challenged dogs will be euthanized to make the space needed and required by the Gloucester County Animal Control. We have three partially blind dogs. We'd like them to finish their precious lives on a high note.

Malcolm is a wonderful spaniel / hound mix, neutered male 6-8 years old, heart worm negative, 45 lbs. He is good on the leash. He is blind in one eye and since there are so many hounds and hound mixes in the system, he is always overlooked by the shelter and the transports. He is full of life and affectionate.

Fancy will really pull at your heart strings. She is fragile, needs to gain weight, has a broken tail and cataracts. She wants to be held..

We are just told that we can't save them all. Of course, we know that, but we're going to try. We may have a week for these. If we know there is a chance for placement we can board them. Our funds are limited and demands great.

Can you help? We know each life saved is a miracle. Dr. Higgins can give you more specific details if you request them. Transport help may be available.
